Celtic's Champions League hopes hang in the balance after defeat by Leipzig

Mulgrew and McGregor on target in pulsating Parkhead clash

Rodgers' side must now win in Germany to progress to the knockout stages

Celtic's hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League hang in the balance after they were beaten 2-1 by RB Leipzig at Parkhead on Tuesday night.

Goals from Charlie Mulgrew and Callum McGregor had given the Scottish champions a 2-1 lead, but Jean-Kevin Augustin's late strike earned Leipzig a share of the points.

The result leaves Celtic third in Group B, two points behind Leipzig and Salzburg, with one game remaining.

Celtic must now win away to Leipzig in their final group game on December 12 to have any chance of progressing to the knockout stages.

It was a pulsating match from start to finish, with both sides creating chances to win the game.

  • Celtic took the lead in the 19th minute when Mulgrew curled a free-kick into the top corner.
  • Leipzig leveled in the 32nd minute through Augustin, who finished clinically after being played in by Marcel Sabitzer.
  • Celtic regained the lead in the 49th minute when McGregor fired a low drive into the bottom corner.
  • Leipzig pushed for an equalizer and were rewarded in the 82nd minute when Augustin headed home a cross from Lukas Klostermann.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers admitted that his side were disappointed not to have won the game.

"We're very disappointed not to have won the game," Rodgers said. "We had a great chance to go 3-1 up, but we didn't take it.

"We're still in a good position to qualify, but we need to go to Leipzig and win our last game."

Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann was pleased with his team's performance.

"I'm very happy with the performance of my team," Nagelsmann said. "We showed great character to come back from 2-1 down.

"We're now in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages."
