Ketel Marte placed on injured list by Diamondbacks, Astros series in jeopardy
Diamondbacks' star infielder Ketel Marte was placed on the 10-day injured list on Monday with a strained right hamstring.
Marte suffered the injury while running the bases in the Diamondbacks' 5-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. He is expected to miss at least two weeks.
The injury is a significant blow to the Diamondbacks, who are already without starting pitcher Zac Gallen (right elbow inflammation). Marte is one of the team's best players, and his absence will be felt in the lineup.
The Diamondbacks are scheduled to open a three-game series against the Houston Astros on Tuesday. Marte is not expected to be ready to play in that series.
The Astros are one of the best teams in the American League, and the Diamondbacks will need to play well to win the series. Marte's absence will make that task more difficult.
The Diamondbacks are hopeful that Marte will be able to return to the lineup by the end of the month. In the meantime, they will need to find a way to replace his production.
One option is to move Sergio Alcantara to shortstop and insert Josh VanMeter at second base. Another option is to call up infielder Geraldo Perdomo from Triple-A Reno.
No matter how the Diamondbacks decide to replace Marte, his absence will be a challenge. He is a key part of the team's offense and defense, and his loss will be felt.
