What is Valley Fever?

Valley fever, also known as coccidioidomycosis, is a respiratory illness caused by a fungus that lives in the soil. The fungus is found in the southwestern United States, including California. When the spores of the fungus are inhaled, they can cause an infection in the lungs. Symptoms of Valley fever can include fever, cough, fatigue, and shortness of breath. In severe cases, the infection can spread to other parts of the body, such as the skin, bones, and joints.
