Breaking News: Major Earthquake Strikes Central Mexico

High-Magnitude Earthquake Ravages Mexico City and Surrounding Region

Death Toll Rises as Rescue Efforts Begin

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale has struck central Mexico, causing widespread damage and injuries. The epicenter of the earthquake was located near the city of Xochimilco, just south of Mexico City, and struck at 1:14 p.m. local time. The earthquake was felt across the country, with particularly severe shaking in the capital and surrounding areas.

Initial reports indicate that the earthquake has caused significant damage to buildings and infrastructure. Several buildings have collapsed, including a school in the Tlalpan borough of Mexico City, trapping dozens of people inside. The earthquake has also caused power outages and disruption to communications, making it difficult to assess the full extent of the damage.

Rescue workers are currently on the scene, working to free trapped people from collapsed buildings. The Mexican government has declared a state of emergency and has deployed the army and emergency services to assist with the response. Hospitals are overwhelmed with injured patients, and medical personnel are working around the clock to provide care.

The death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations continue. As of 3:00 p.m. local time, at least 100 people have been confirmed dead, and thousands more are believed to be injured. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has expressed condolences to the victims and their families and has pledged the full support of the government in the recovery effort.
